NEW PROCESSES FOR APPLYING FOR A NEW LICENSE

Beginning May 1, 2010, you can start your application for a concealed handgun license in two different ways.

1. GO ONLINE

http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/administration/crime_records/chl/chlsindex.htm

- Complete the online application
- Complete your affidavits online

When you complete payment to the Department of Public Safety online, it will give you a receipt and notice letter. You must print out the receipt/notice/checklist that appears on the screen telling you any additional documents/paperwork based on any special conditions - place of birth; residence address; etc. - that needs be completed and returned to the Department. It will have a barcode and must be included with the additional items needed by DPS.

Be sure you understand what is being asked in the application and affidavits as you are swearing to the information when you complete the process. You will not receive an application packet in the mail.

You just set up a class date and come to class with your printed out checklist and identification so we can be sure you have all the documents they require. We will complete your photographs and fingerprints in class.

When you complete the class, you will be issued a CHL 100 showing that you have passed both the classroom and range qualification.

You will then mail the required documentation (i.e. photographs, fingerprints, CHL-100 and any other documentation they have requested) to the Department of Public Safety for them to process the background checks and issue your license.

2. OR YOU CAN JUST COME TO CLASS

We will have a paper application packet for you to complete. We will go over the eligibility requirements and documents to be sure you understand them. We will then notarize your affidavits, do your photographs, fingerprints, how to put the application together, range qualification and the 10 hours of training. .

When you complete the class, you will be issued a CHL 100 showing that you have passed both the classroom and range qualification. This must also be included in the documentation.

You will then mail the application with payment attached, affidavits, fingerprints, photographs, CHL-100 and any other required documentation to the Department of Public Safety for them to process the background checks and issue your license.

RENEWAL APPLICATIONS - You can begin the process 6 months prior to your license expiration date. If you have taken the class, gotten your license and renewed one time, a second time and this is your third time to renew, call DPS as you may not have to take the class and range qualification but every 10 years.

Note: RENEWAL APPLICATIONS NO LONGER REQUIRE THE FINGERPRINTS AND PHOTOGRAPHS. If license is already expired, you must renew before your next birth date or you will have to start over.

The renewal process can be completed by –
